New submission
deadlines...
In every issue we will
be featuring layouts on a range of themes in our Readers Gallery.
Initial submissions can be sent to us in two ways (including specific
competition related submissions):
- Post: a good quality colour photocopy of your
layout plus concept and list of materials used to: Up2Scrap, PO
Box 12188, Palmerston North, New Zealand.
NB:
All submissions must be original i.e. not published on-line or in
print before. Please do not submit layouts/cards/off-the-page items
that have been viewed on personal blog sites etc. See page
36 in the current issue of Up2Scrap - Nov 09/Jan 10! We
will now be producing an additional issue of Up2Scrap each annum
i.e. five issues each year, so our submission dates have changed
to take our new production schedule on board as follows:
February
/ April 2010 (submissions
extended to December 8th, 2009)
- "Digi-hybrid"
- get on board with this fun and innovative trend and
design a single page layout (theme of your choice) that shows
off your new skills!
- "All you need is love!" - Create
love-themed gifts and cards to remind someone how much you appreciate
them.
- "ROFL" - Short for "rolling
on the floor laughing"... share a moment with us that really
made you smile (single page).
- "Back to School" - Make a funky
wall chart/calendar for the new school term and get your kids
to help - this is a family project so please send us a photo of
all contributors along with your submission.
May
/ June 2010 (submissions
now due February 14th, 2010)
- "A-Z!"-
This will be the first of a series! Submit a layout that features
a large alpha monogram of your choice ranging from "A"-"F".
- "Mums
the Word!" - Create special gifts
and cards for Mum (or Grandmum).
- "Why I
love my Mum" - A gallery for kids
aged 4 to 14 years as of February 14th. Show us in a single page
layout what you love best about your mum!
- "Around
the World" - layouts and off-the-page
items showcasing memories of special trips abroad.
We
encourage readers to submit digital projects including layouts for
the above themes. Also, check out our blog
site http://up2scrap.typepad.com for the Sketch Challenge of the
month - submit your version of same to be in to win great prizes!
Some
guidelines to follow to give your submitted projects a better chance
of being accepted include:
- Select great photography - Try to use photos
in your layouts/projects that are well lit, have good contrast
levels and showcase the key subject matter clearly, without a
whole lot of extra/unrelated clutter in the background.
An exception to this rule is when you create projects with retro
or heritage photos, where history 'speaks for itself' even if
the photo reproduction is poor.
- "Co-ordinate your products" - Layouts
and projects that co-ordinate papers and embellishments well,
are more likely to be accepted. Avoid using excessive and
diverse embellishments that add no real value to your theme.
Don't be afraid to mix and match patterns and product ranges,
but still remember to present an overall 'feel' or 'emotion' that
communicates your message simply.
- "Use design elements effectively" -
Try submitting projects that use the basic elements of design
in a unique way e.g. line, shape, form, tone, texture and colour.
Some repetition of design elements is great but don't forget that
"less is often more".
- "Try out for the less likely themes" -
We receive a lot of entries for the more popular themes we request
submissions for e.g. babies, back to school, pets, Christmas etc.
If you want to improve your selection 'odds', try picking a reader's
gallery that is more unusual in theme to submit to.
Finally,
don't give up! It's not easy risking being rejected but if
you reach for the stars, sometimes you make it to the moon!
Policy
on Submissions!
The Up2Scrap team appreciates
that sending in a submission of your work can take a major leap
of faith! With that in mind, do our best to follow the proceedure
outlined below:
- All submissions receive acknowledgement of receipt within 72
hours
(3 working days so allow extra time for submissions sent just
before the weekend).
- If a submission is definitely not suitable for publication in
the next two issues of Up2Scrap, we will advise the sender at
this time but we
may choose to reserve some layouts, cards and projects etc. to
a 'short list' and will notify you of same.
- If your work is reserved on the short list, we reqire that during
the time period for selection i.e. the submission due date, your
work is not published elsewhere including on web or personal blog.
- While some layouts may still be accepted immediately, short
listed submissions may not be finally accepted or rejected until
the submission due date. At that time we
will notify all those on this list whether their submission has
been successful or not.
This new policy means
that all readers sending submisisons are made aware of receipt of
their work in good time and if it is not suitable, they can publish
their work on personal blog etc. By short listing items that we
think might be suitable for publication, we allow ourselves some
time to consider and compare submissions fairly, during the time
period allowed.
